Happy Flaw
I wasn’t a good reader as a kid. I didn’t read as fast as my classmates, and I didn’t understand what I was reading.
In first grade, my teachers decided to do something about it. While the rest of the class had Reading, I sat by myself in the school library. Stories were projected onto the […]

On Negative Reviews…
As many of us OC writer-types will do occasionally, I browsed over to amazon to check out A MAGIC OF TWILIGHT, and found that someone had given it a one-star review.
Of course, I had to read it — it’s like picking at a scab: you know it’s going to hurt and you shouldn’t do […]

Pushing Your Punches
One of my favorite aspects of writing is exploring different points of view. Since I became a martial artist, I enjoy taking this idea a step further: How do my different characters fight? How do fights inform their character?
A lot of our heroes are scrappers, willing to fight dirty to protect themselves and their loved […]

Thoughts on FanFiction
I don’t write fanfic, and I generally don’t read it, either. Neither of these statements should be taken as a judgment on fanfiction. My reading stack is simply too overwhelming already, and as for my writing … well, I’ve got to stick with what helps pay the bills. But I’m constantly fascinated by the discussion […]

Confession of an Unbeliever, or: Forgive Me, Yoda
I have to make a confession: I’m a science fiction writer, and I don’t believe in aliens.
By “believe” I mean my ability to suspend my disbelief, and by “aliens” I mean the ones that typically show up in SF, and more specifically, the ones that talk. Maybe this marks me as a MundaneSF writer, but […]

Cutting my losses
This is post is not about how sucky the market is or money or anything like that. It’s about books. Specifically, the books that are on my shelves that I. Will. Never. Read. (Ever or Again, depending)
I started going over my overflowing shelves in an effort to clean them up, to dust, and […]

Top Ten Science-Based Sci-Fi Movies (Revised)
This is a revised version of a list I posted on my blog a couple of days ago that was also farked. I was convinced that the Alien and Aliens movies had a number of shortcomings compared to some other films and have added on a couple of others in their place. The tragedy is […]

In Praise of Formula Writing
In my alternate life as Tate Hallaway, romance writer, I often hear non-romance readers complain that romance is all just a matter of “the formula,” which they are convinced we all receive by mail from romance publishers. While, it’s entirely possible those things still exist somewhere, most writers I know, romance or otherwise, make stuff […]

That word again
Genre.
The Encarta World English Dictionary that came loaded on my iBook gives one definition of “genre” as “one of the categories that artistic works of all kinds can be divided into on the basis of form, style, or subject matter. For example, detective novels are a genre of fiction.”
What triggered that interest in the definition […]

Post-Holiday Book Suggestions
I find that December tends to leave me with a handful of gift certificates to Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon, and so on. I know I’m not the only one. So it occurred to me that this might be a good time for a book recommendation thread.
Of course, the temptation is to start out the […]
